Silverpaw stalked around the river, waiting for her new mentor to arrive. She had just been apprenticed to Duskflight. She looked at the shadows watching the river's ripple closely. As she looked up, she saw a leaf fall from a near by tree. Thinking it would be fun, she started to chase it, batting at it with her paws. It was fun until she got her back paw stuck. It was caught in a rock and she couldn't get it out. "Someone, help," She cried, "My paw is stuck und a large rock." She was scared and hoped someone would hear her cry.

The dappled light shining through the leaves made the golden patches on Duskflight's sides glow slightly as he padded through the forest. There hadn't been much to do in camp that morning, so he might as well spend some time with his apprentice. Good apprentices made good warriors -- the better training they had, the better NightClan would be.
The thought faded from his mind, however, as he approached the river. The mewling of a young cat reached the deputy's ears, and Duskflight increased his pace, following the cry. When he emerged through the trees, he saw Silverpaw with her back paw stuck under a rock. Studying the scene, he guessed he could move the rock fairly easily if he tried -- but instead he turned to face the apprentice, black tail moving slowly back and forth. "So, how'd you manage that?"

Silverpaw looked down looked down at her two, free front paws in shame. She was embarrassed that she had not seen the rock there in the forst place. "I was batting at this leaf, and didn't see the big rock. I jumped up to get the leaf and when i landed, i slipped and my paw feel under the rock. I tried to get it out, but, it hur too much." She explained in a stuttered tone. She was hoping she wouldn't get in trouble, but she knew it was bound to happen. "I-i'm sorry." she said. "Please, help me."

Duskflight's whiskers twitched. She was chasing a leaf? How... kit-like. But still, if she was serious, it could be a form of practice... Yet here she was stuck under a rock. Granted, she was a new apprentice -- things would take time. And what better time to start than now?
The deputy sighed quietly and moved forward, putting his shoulder against the rock and pushing. He managed to nudge it to the side, off Silverpaw's back foot, and stepped back. "How bad is it?" he asked rather formally, guesturing to the paw. It if was broken, it might be a problem... if it wasn't they could train right now.

Silverpaw quickly moved and shook her back paw. It didn't hurt at least.
"I think it's ok. It doesn't really hurt." She said, looking at her mentors eyes. "I think i can manage."
Her eyes were glistening with guilt and shame. She was thankful for her mentor.
"So," She said looking down at her front paws, "what are we doing today." She asked, hoping to change the subject and move on to her training. She anticipated what she was going to do. Silverpaw could hear the scuttle of tiny feet all the while and scented mice around her. Realizing she was hungery, but didn't budge, awaiting in excitement on what she would do first.

With a flick of an ear, Duskflight straightened up from where he was bent down looking at the paw. It looked fine to him, and if she said it didn't hurt...
The deputy saw the shame in her eyes, but said nothing. Maybe she'd learn a lesson. She was lucky she had help this time -- if there was no one around, there was no telling what might have happened to her. Next time, she wouldn't make such a mistake. His paws flexed against the ground; NightClan was becoming stronger already.
At the apprentice's question, he looked around. There was enough space here for them to practice. She was a new apprentice, so they'd best start from the beginning. "First thing's first," he meowed. "You should learn the hunter's crouch. The sooner you know how to hunt, the bigger asset you'll be to the Clan." Without waiting for a response, he shifted down, legs tense and tail in the air, and froze in his crouch to demonstrate.

Silverpaw bacame excited at the thought of being able to hunt. She looked at her mentor to see how he was standing. She had to make sure it was perfect. After she watched for half a moment, she crouched down and put her tail in the air, tensing up her muscles. She made sure she was low but her tail kept drooping down. After a minute or two she was standing perfectly still, hoping she was doing it right.
She tried not looking at her mentor as she started to speak. "I'm i doing it right?" She asked, hoping it was correct. She could still smell the couple of mice that were close. Her stomach was rumbling with hunger.

She's not bad, Duskflight thought, examining Silverpaw with critical purple eyes. Probably had enough experience chasing leaves around.
"Keep your tail still," he reminded her. "The prey might see or hear the movement and get scared off." Bending easily back down into his crouch, the deputy raised one paw and crept forward. "Now move forward, slowly. Try to reach the rock by the river. If you make a sound, you have to start over," he instructed.

Silverpaw took in every word her mentor said. She looked forward and concentrated on the rock and her tail still. She started to slowly creep over to the rock. She was doing good for a moment but then she heard a twig crunch under her paw. She got up and sulked back over to her mentor and started over. This time she kept her tail a little lower and concentrated on a certain point on the rock. She crept slowly, being attentive to her surroundings. As she crept, a flash of fur flashed over the rock. She was started but kept going, soundlessly.
When she made it to the rock she looked up at Duskflight, excitement twinkling in her eyes. She pushed the thought of the fur aside and looked at her mentor. "Was that good?" She asked hoping the answer to be yes.

Slowly straightening from his position, Duskflight kept his eyes locked on Silverpaw as she moved. His mouth twitched upward for no more than a second as he heard a snap -- a simple mistake. Most apprentices made it. He could sense her frustration as she restarted.
Her next try was even better. "Good enough," the mentor replied, padding closer to her apprentice. "Watch your steps to make sure you're not stepping on anything. You'll be fine with a little more work." He glanced at the sun to check the time before falling into a crouch for the third time. With one quick movement, he sprang into the air and landed lithely on a pebble in the grass in front of him. Looking back to Silverpaw, he said, "This one's harder. You need to be balanced, smooth, and fast. Try it."

Silverpaw looked at the stance. The jump looked almost exactly like the way she used to chase leaves. She bent down, getting onto the crouch and tightened all of her muscles. She concentrated on a small leaf to help her keep balance. Silveropaw leapt into the air and landed soundlessly on to the leaf, ending in the same stance. The scent of mouse was getting stronger where she had landed.
Silverpaw looked around, first looking at her mentor then closing her eyes to hone in the scent and sound. She slightly opened her eyes and silently followed her senses, she crouched down and silently walked towards it. Pouncing she caught the mouse between her paws and then grabbed by its tail, the mouse sqirming. She brought to her mentor and quickly bit its neck. then dropped it in fornt of the Deputy.
"How was that, Duskflight. Was i good?" She asked, in hpes to impress her mentor.

Duskflight's eyes widened the slightest bit in skeptical admiration as he watched Silverpaw's performance. As she landed from her jump and looked at him, he was about to comment on how she did, but she had closed her eyes and was moving again. It only took a few seconds for him to realize she was on the hunt, and he had to admit, as she lay her prey in front of him, she did a decent job for a newly-made apprentice.
"Nice catch," he offered, though he was usually scarce with compliments. "It might be harder in the forest, though, where there's more brush in the way. We'll work on that later." Throwing a glance at the sky, he got to his paws and continued, "We should go back to camp. I think we've done enough training for one day."

Silverpaw looked at him in excitement. She did well and she was very happy about that. She followed her mentor back. She was so excited about how she had done something right for once. She carried her catch with her, a little pride shining in her eyes. Shewas to happy.
"So, when are we going out to train next?" She asked the Deputy, too excited about what she might do next and when she was going to train again.

Picking his way through the brush, Duskflight threw a glance at his apprentice as he followed the river back in the direction of camp. "Maybe tomorrow," he replied. "We'll see what needs to be done around camp. If there are some other apprentices we might be able to train with them." The weather hadn't been exactly wonderful lately, so hunting would probably be a priority. Best to teach Silverpaw to hunt first so they could feed the Clan. And at the rate she was going, hopefully it wouldn't take too long to get her to a hunting ability where she could go out often.
Trying to think through tomorrow's possible schedule, the deputy turned away from the river towards camp and, checking to make sure Silverpaw was keeping up, padded quietly back.
((I guess we should start a thead in camp, then... *enters Duskflight there*))

((Should i join the one with You and Greengaze then?)) Silverpaw held her head up high, excitement shining even more in her silver eyes. Her strides grew more triumphant as she caught up to the deputy. They were walking side by side now.
"O, yippe, i hope that the other apprentices are there. I really, really want to train some more." She purred, the mouse making her words a bit inaudible. The mouse dangled as she walked, praying to StarClan that there would be at least one other apprentice to train with.
